Down to Earth with Jane Green

Recession? What recession?

I didn’t write today. I had a super late night last night after travelling to New Jersey for a Book Festival. When the request came in I thought, New Jersey? Sure. That’s not far.

I should have known there was something up when they booked me a train to Philadelphia.

So, three hours there, three hours back, and I woke up this morning knowing that today was not a writing day for me. (Thank you to the adorable people at the festival - Vicki, Randi, Sabrina and Brian - who tried to ply me with delicious cakes and cookies all night). Plus, there was nothing else to do on the train but write, so I brought my computer and wrote twice as much as I usually do, and figured I deserved a day off today.

New NBF and I hopped in the car and drove to a Junior League fair in Hartsdale, where I bought much too much jewelry and tried to excuse it by saying that nothing was very expensive. The sum total however is something I’m not going to think about.

Recession? What recession?

New NBF bought nothing, although she is extremely tempted by a beautiful sapphire bracelet which I am trying to convince her to buy in order to make me feel better. She did say she’d ask Santa. He phoned, in fact, while we were at the fair, and she used the opportunity to mention her early Christmas wish. He wasn’t too impressed, and I know Santa thinks I am a horrible influence on New NBF because whenever he phones, we are always shopping…

And now, the Smalls have left to go to the Republican (who, despite recent events, seems to be in excellent spirits which means, I hope, that love is in the air for him…), and I am sitting in my office, in absolute quiet, with a glass of white wine, finishing off my chapter. This is an excellent way to write. I wonder how a Jane Green novel would turn out if I wrote it ever so slightly tipsy every night. Excellent idea. I may have to try it next time…

At some point I will be making supper: curried parsnip and apple soup, and steak in a mushroom and wine sauce, but right now I plan to carry on writing until I’m done. And if I end up drinking too much, hell, there’s always Progresso in the pantry…

Although I don’t think writing EVERY night while slightly tipsy is a good idea, I’d love to see what you come up with. I’m sure it would be hilarious! At least you could back up and delete what you deemed inappropriate the next day. You can’t say that about tipsy emailing though. Have you ever tried it? AWKWARD! I wish I hadn’t tried it. =/

My advice to NBF is buy, buy! The only thing better than jewelry is more jewelry! Fortunately my sweet husband has figured this out. He just gave me diamond stud earrings for our first anniversary.

By the way, dinner sounds delicious. I am going to have to look for a recipe for curried parsnip and apple soup.

I hope Santa brings New NBF the bracelet, I love it when the perfect match is made!!

I think writing while tipsy is great, as long as you DON’T delete the next day. Just try it and post it on here before sending it off. We would be honest and helpful critics and would promise not to laugh at you. Well, not too loudly at least. xx
